So far in this series, we have covered six: survival, approval, control, hustle, receiving, and trust Now, I have to clear something up right at the start because this tax, if you ask me, gets misunderstood more than any of the other ones that we are covering in this series.
In this episode, we are talking about the visibility tax. You know, the cost of staying hidden. And to be clear, I am not just talking about whether or not you like to go live on social media. I am not here to tell you that you need to post more. This is not about your content. This is about something much deeper that is happening right now in your life experience.
It is about your identity, it is about your truth, and it is about your calling. It is about the gap between who you actually are and who [00:04:00] you allow people to see. Because here's the thing almost nobody understands: you can be everywhere and still be hidden. You can post every single day on every platform there is, you can show up to every event, and you can still keep the realest, boldest, most powerful version of yourself completely concealed.

Now, when I say visibility tax, I [00:06:00] want you to know that I am not just spouting theory. I have done my fair share of playing small and hiding in plain sight for years. Some of it I didn't even realize, and even after I realized it, still just making the decision to not show up in my fullness. In my mind, I was as big and bold as they come, but the truth is I was truly anything but.
When I started building this business, I kept a part of me tucked away, the God part of me, the faith part, the part of me that knew that the work that I was doing is my divine assignment and not just out here being a marketer, right? Or a speaker. I kept it quiet because I thought it was too much for the business world.
You know, separate church and state. I thought if I led with my faith, I would be too polarizing, too churchy, too niched. So I gave you the strategist, and I hid the woman of God. I did that for many years. I was visible, but I wasn't fully known. Like, you know how they say to know me is to [00:07:00] love me? Yeah, that's kinda what I was up with.
I was spending real time not allowing who I really am come to, to light. Now, if you know anything about me, you know I'm a God girl. And in 2013, I decided to take a bold stand for the God girl in me so that I could take a bold stand for God. And God told me then that if I took a bold stand for Him, that He would make it easy for me.
And I have to tell you Hearing God say that with every fiber of my being is what allowed me to stop hiding the most important part of me. Now, I'm gonna be honest. I may never be a girl who goes live on Instagram or Facebook or TikTok every single day. I might not ever be a girl who goes live on any of those platforms every single week.

Because I knew that I could not keep hiding the best parts of me from the very people I believe that I'm called to serve. Because for a while, I did, and I even had an excuse or a reason or a justification as to why I did that But then when I decided that I was no longer going to leave the most [00:09:00] important s- parts of me out of the equation, that I was gonna allow people to get to know me...
Listen, I am quirky. I am sometimes ghetto. I am almost always bougie. If you can be ghetto and bougie at the same time, that's me. I call that ghettois. Like, I am all of those things, and I decided that I wanted to allow all of those things show in a way that, that supports and honors me. Like, I'm, you know, I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna be someone I'm not and I'm not gonna do something that I'm not feeling is the right way for me to express myself.
And I know that this is one of the things that this tax costs those of you who are also paying it, and that's what we're getting into in this episode. So I did finally decide to stop hiding my faith and bringing her out loud, and when I did, I started to say, "You know what? You can love God and make millions [00:10:00] at the same time."
That this, the work that I do is marketplace ministry, and that I am a business owner who hears from God. I have a class that we offer to clients called Hearing the Voice of God, right? And what I realized is by doing that, the right people would find me. The ones who have been looking for exactly what I do.
They want to build businesses, but they want to love God, and they don't wanna be churchy. They want to have everything that's promised to them. That is who I am, and that is what I bring to the table. And by deciding to put my life out there and to show it fully, I'm opening them up to the answer that they have been praying for, right?
Because the lie at the center of this tax is believing that hiding the realest part of you is actually keeping you safe And keeping you palatable. You need to potentially offend people. You have to be willing to allow the hidden parts of you, because the hidden [00:11:00] parts are the exact part that people are searching for right now.
And your hiddenness is not protecting you, it is actually keeping you from the very people you say you wanna help. And trust me when I say they need you. They cannot experience transformation without the gift that you are uniquely qualified to bring into their life experience. Now, I'm always amazed when I'm preparing an episode and I start doing some research on the topic.
Like, I never just wanna come in here and just spout and just hope that y'all get it. I always wanna have some research to back up what I'm saying. So KPMG did a study of 750 high-performing executive women. Now, these are women at the top of their game, the top of their fields, and you might not be surprised by what they found.
I wasn't entirely surprised, I was just glad that there was data to back up what I knew to be true. 75% of them had experienced imposter syndrome, the [00:12:00] buzzword, in their careers. It is a whole thing. 75%. And these are not unqualified women. These are women with MBAs and PhDs and advanced degrees, and they're in the C-suite.
These women have accomplished career feats that most won't even ever try to accomplish in their career. These are some of the most accomplished women in corporate America, in the boardrooms around the globe, and three out of four of them have felt at some point like they were a fraud who was about to be found out.
Did you hear that? They're the baddest women in the workforce, yet they have felt insignificant, they have felt unsafe. They have questioned their power even though they have done the work to get the credentials to make them the very person who should be saying the things and doing the things that they do.
And here's the detail out of this whole study that really stopped me dead in my tracks. [00:13:00] Nearly half of them, 47%, said that their self-doubt came from never having expected to reach the level of success that they had actually reached. Let me say that one more time. The higher they climbed, the more like imposters they actually felt, precisely because they had arrived somewhere that they never expected to arrive Which is the exact woman who hides from her next level.
They did not expect to be the woman who, who hid from their, her next level. She does not feel like she belongs there, so what does she do? She shrinks from the place that she came from. Listen, I did my own study amongst clients enrolled in our programs, and I found that more than 80% of them were told as children that they should be seen and not heard.
Were you told that? I know I was. And that created a pattern of not using their voice and [00:14:00] visibility to impact others. And you already know that what you learn as a child, you repeat unconsciously as an adult, and it becomes a pattern of behavior, an unconscious, subconscious pattern. 75% of executive women feel like imposters.
So the visible women that you are likely comparing yourself to, she feels like a fraud, too. She's just willing to be seen while she's scared So I'm gonna invite you, I'm gonna give you permission to let go of the story that visible people have it all figured out, and you are the only one who is full of doubt.
I wanna give you permission to release that because three out of four of them feel exactly like you do. The only difference between you and them isn't even confidence. It's a willingness to be seen before the doubt goes away. Because here's what I know, the doubt does not go away first. [00:15:00] You go first, and then your confidence catches up with you while you are moving.
Again, I say God will give you more while you are moving than he ever will if you stand still. Now, here are five signs that you may be paying the visibility tax. Number one: you play small in rooms where you actually belong. You are in the room, but then you shrink inside of it. You defer, you downplay, you deflect, you let other people lead the ideas and the conversations that you have the most expertise to actually lead.
You make yourself smaller so that the people around you won't be uncomfortable. You're more concerned of their comfortability than your own. But here's what I want you to understand. You did not earn your seat at the table to spend the whole meeting apologizing for being there. And as Marianne Williamson says in her poem Our Deepest Fear, "Playing small does not serve the world."
And playing small in a room where you belong is not humility. It is [00:16:00] hiding. Sign number two: you have a message that you are actually not saying out in the world. There is a thing that you actually believe, a bold, powerful truth, a real conviction, a position that might upset people, that might ruffle some feathers, snatch some edges, and you keep it filed away because you feel like saying it out loud feels too risky, too polarizing, and too much.
But here's what I want you to know and understand. People are programmed to notice what's difference, and if you are disruptive, you will get their attention, and they will probably invest. I'm just saying So stop watering down yourself and instead of blending in, stand out. Your power is in the very thing that you keep editing out to keep everyone else comfortable.
Transformation requires offense. Seriously. In marketing and sales, I tell my clients all the time that your content has to be 93% emotional and 7% logical. The whole point of your marketing is to offend people enough for them to be willing [00:17:00] to get uncomfortable enough to make the needed investment to get access to the solution to give them what they truly desire anyway.
You stifling your voice is not serving anyone. Sign number three: you hide behind your business. Listen, you let your brand be visible so that you don't have to be. You hide behind the logo, your team, the framework, y- the company we so that you never have to stand fully exposed as the I, the CEO. But you need to understand that people do not fall in love with and make buying decisions based on logos.
They fall in love and follow people, and the more you hide the human behind the brand, the harder it is for anyone to truly connect with what it is that you have built. I know I have clients just because of the quirkiness of who I am. There are tons of other people who technically do the same thing that I do, albeit nobody does it as good as your girl.
I'm just saying. If you've been doing all the right things but still [00:18:00] feel like you're carrying more weight than you should, it's not your strategy, it's your pattern. There's a hidden way that you lead that's shaping your money, your success, and your peace, and until you see it, you'll keep working harder than you have to.

Sign number four, you downplay your success. When someone names your accomplishments or achievements, you minimize behind them. Have you ever listened to someone read your bio? Like, I'm... Let me make this about me. I speak a lot. I get on a lot of stages and, you know, if I'm not playing my speaker intro video, which is like my highlight reel, and a person is reading my introduction, I sit and I listen to them reading about me as if they're not talking about me sometimes.
And other times, I sit as if they are talking [00:20:00] about me, and I relish in all that I have accomplished. Listen, I've been out here working, and there were way too many years where I was doing the hustle and grind work to get the accolades that I have to pretend to minimize them. Yeah, no, we're not doing that.
So I stand proud and I listen to that bio, and then I take the stage and I get excited and I step boldly into it. And it is my confidence. When I come down off the stages, y'all, when people are waiting to speak to me, more often than not, you know the question they ask me? How did you get so confident?
Where does that come from? They are paying the visibility tax, and I am out here living into the mandate on my life because before I was formed in my mother's womb, God knew me. He approved me. He called me prophet, and he gave me a message to share with the nations. And like I've already told you, I am too dumb to doubt God.
And so if [00:21:00] he said it, it's gotta be good. So I just roll with the goodness of it, and I allow it to be instead of minimizing. I do not soften my credentials, and neither should you. Now, I get it. You think that softening your credentials is going to not feel like you're bragging. So you'll hide your wins so that you will not be seen as too much, you know, too ambitious, too successful, but ambition is not a dirty word Every time you shrink your accomplishments, you are training people to underestimate you, and you are robbing the people that need you most, as well as the people who are coming behind you, of proof of what is possible.
Sign number five: you watch less qualified people take up space, more than likely the space you're supposed to hold. Have you ever watched someone with half your depth, half your experience, and half your wisdom get the stage, the clients, the recognition, and the platform? [00:22:00] And honestly, you feel like it should have been yours.
Now, you would never say it out loud, but you know it stung. You know it makes you feel a way. But here's the truth that I need you to sit with. They did not take up your space. You actually vacated it. They were simply willing to be seen in the place that you were afraid to stand Now here's what I want you to understand.
The market does not reward the most qualified, it rewards the most visible. And that is heartbreaking, I know. And it should only be heartbreaking if you keep choosing to hide. Now, you don't have to be out there in all the things. You need to pick your lane and rock the hell out of your lane. That's all you need to do.
Whichever lane is yours, be in it fully. Take up the space that is required inside of that lane because you are brilliant. You have been given something really powerful [00:23:00] to share with the world, and to not share it is so damn selfish. I'm sorry. It's just way too selfish. Now, if three or more of those landed for you, then I want you to hear me very clearly.
You, my friend, do not have a marketing problem. You have a hiding problem, and no funnel, no strategy, no rebrand will fix a business whose greatest asset, you, is in the witness protection program. I mean, for real, like, let's just be honest. And this tax is already costing you way too much because the hiding feels freeing, but it is anything but.
Visibility is how people find you, how they trust you, and ultimately how they choose you, right? Now, the hidden expert, that's you, you lose every single time to the visible amateur because you cannot be hired for what you will not let anyone see. Now, you are not more than likely losing to better practitioners, you are losing to the ones that are braver, and every client who went to [00:24:00] someone less equipped than you went there because that person was willing to be seen and therefore found.
Now, something else that really will cost you is the next level itself, right? Here's what I believe is the trap. The next level requires a more visible you, bigger rooms, bigger stages, a bigger voice, right? So you can't really just tiptoe into it as the hidden version of yourself. The very thing your next level requires is the very thing you're going to have to do, even though right now you're refusing to do it.
Which means as long as you hide, the ceiling stays exactly where it is, and you will keep wondering why it has not moved. But here's what I want you to know and understand. Getting out there, not... You don't have to be everywhere, just pick yours, your lane and rock it. Someone is praying for the exact thing that only you can say, that only you can fix, and your hiding is the reason that their answer has not arrived.[00:25:00]
But here is the cost that I think should move you more than the money, because it's not about you at all. Right now, somewhere- Someone needs you. The wisdom that only you have, the stories that only you can tell, the framework that only you have figured out, the help that only you can give. And these people, they are actively searching for you, but they cannot find you because you're not showing up.
Again, you gotta pick one place. You don't need to be in all the places, but one place. And your silence is not you being neutral, your silence is you being selfish. Your hiddenness has a body count of breakthroughs that never reach the people that they were sent for. And when you hide your gift, you're not just playing small, you are withholding the answer to someone else's prayer.
That was the thing that got me, y'all. I was like, you know, it's one thing to not wanna be out here, but it's something else entirely [00:26:00] to be causing someone else's suffering I think that there's a cost even bigger than those costs. It's living a smaller life than you were called to live. You will watch other people build a thing that had your name on it, say the message you were too scared to say, and live the calling that you kept hitting, hidden, and you will know it inside.
You will know that it could have been you if you had been willing to have been seen. I think that this is the most expensive thing that the visibility tax steals. Not the clients you're calling, the one life you were given to be fully, unapologetically expressed through. That's what the world is not actually getting to experience, and I think that is just so selfish.
If you had the cure to cancer, you would not keep it to yourself, right? And remember, being seen is not vanity. I think it's stewardship. And to step into it, you have to understand the lie that has kept you hidden, [00:27:00] the one that dresses your fears up as virtue, the very reason the thing that you keep saying you desire is escaping you.
I tend to think that there is a way for you to get set free because the visibility tax is wearing the mask of humility. You have been telling yourself that staying small, that downplaying your gifts, and keeping quiet is humility. It is not. It is hiding. I will never forget when my girl, Shari Riley, came on the show and said, "You are not being humble.
You are hiding." And the hiding has hijacked the name of the virtue that it has no right to. Real humility is not thinking less of yourself. Real humility is being so secure in who you are that you can use your gift fully in service of others without needing to make it about you. Humility uses the gift, whereas hiding hides it.

Trust me when I tell you, you are not too much. You have been too hidden. The world does not need a smaller you, it needs the real one. And for those of you who are faith-driven, this matters even more because so many people have spiritualized their hiding. Again, we call it being humble before God. There are so many things that religion has stolen from having an amazing relationship with God, 'cause here's the thing, scripture does not tell you to hide your light.
It actually says the opposite. It says, "Let your light so shine," right? It says, "You are the light of the world, and a city on a hill cannot be hidden." You, my friend, are a [00:30:00] city on a hill. It says that you should not put your lamp under a basket. The gift was given to be given, period. And if you allow the fear of who is hiding to stop you, I think that you're just being plain old disobedient.
So again, I ask you, who are you pretending not to be? Because as long as you pretend someone else is fulfilling your calling out in the world But you can shift all of that, right? Here are three quick steps to shift from being hidden to visible. Step number one, say the very things that you have been editing out Step number two, claim your authority out loud.
Stop downplaying. Stop hiding behind the we. Say, "I built this. I know this. I am the expert in this." Own your credentials. I mean, you done went to all [00:31:00] the schools and got all the programs and all the certifications. Own 'em. Name your results. Claim your receipts. Let people see you, not just the brand. That is not arrogance.
Arrogance is claiming what you have not earned, but you earned this. Owning what is truly yours is not even bragging, it is just telling the truth. I'm just saying. And step number three is to be seen before you feel ready. The visibility tax hides a different part of you depending upon how you're wired.

I wanna invite you to go live without makeup, without the filters. The world gets to see your highlight reel, but they don't actually get to meet the person underneath. Your growth is letting people see the real you, not just the performance of you. Actually being known, not just being watched. If you are a producer, hey, producer, you hide behind your work.
You let your output be visible while you stay safely secure behind the scenes, telling yourself that the work speaks for itself. But the work cannot build the relationships that you can. Your growth is stepping out from behind the deliverables and letting people see the brilliance of who actually created all the things.
If you are a Pathmaker, [00:34:00] hey, Pathmaker, you hide behind motion. You never stay visible on any one thing long enough for it to truly allow you to be known as that thing. Because being pinned down to one message for you feels like a trap, and constant reinvention keeps you moving in a target that no one can fully see and therefore judge.
Now, your growth is staying still and visible in one thing long enough to actually become known for that very thing. If you are a powerhouse, hey, powerhouse, you hide your humanity. You are like a robot, and you're so strong, and you like to be visible as the strong, capable one, the one who can handle it.
You keep the struggle, the need, and the real story concealed. Your invulnerable front is its own kind of hiding, and your growth is letting people see the whole you, not just your armor, because your realness is your most powerful [00:35:00] strength, I think. And if you are a prophet, hey, prophet, you hide your message.
You carry the truth, the word, the revelation, and you soften it, or you withhold it, or you wait to be invited to share it because the boldest version of what you see feels like way too much for most people to receive. So your growth is releasing the full message without any conditions and without waiting for permission because the people who need it, they need it in its fullness.
They don't need the watered down version of it, and they need you to say it now, and it's gonna take courage for you to do so. Now, I hope you see by now that every archetype is hiding a different part of themselves, but the costs are identical, a world that never gets to meet the real you. And the question remains the same for every single one of you.
Who are you pretending not to be? You're so busy trying not to be who you really are that you're being someone else [00:36:00] that you're not also. Not by forcing yourself to post more, but by building the internal security that makes visibility feel safe instead of dangerous because the hiding is not a confidence trick that you can fake your way out of.
