Ep 424 – The Hustle Tax: When Your Work Ethic Starts Working Against You
This is the 4th part of the Hidden Taxes That Are Costing Your Millions Series
This episode is powered by The Ascension Archetype Quiz.
Your work ethic might be one of the most expensive things about you. I know that sounds ridiculous when working hard is probably how you got here. It earned you the degrees, built the reputation, grew the business and helped you become the person everyone describes as driven. But somewhere between proving you could make it and building the success you prayed for, hard work can quietly become something else. You stop working because the work requires it and start working because you require it to feel worthy. And once your identity needs you to stay productive, busy and exhausted to feel valuable, hustle stops being a strategy and becomes an addiction. That's when the thing you've been praised for your entire life starts sending you a bill. Welcome to The Hustle Tax.
If you're the hardest-working person you know, that may not be the flex you think it is. You can have an incredible work ethic, build a successful business, cross seven figures and still be running on the deeply ingrained belief that you haven't done enough to be enough. In part four of the Hidden Taxes Series, we're auditing The Hustle Tax, the invisible cost of confusing productivity with worthiness and exhaustion with effectiveness. We're getting into hustle culture, entrepreneur burnout, workaholism, CEO productivity, rest guilt, high-achiever identity and why working more hours can actually produce diminishing returns. But this conversation goes deeper than your calendar. Because if your business gets your best while your body, relationships and life get your leftovers, you don't need another productivity hack. You need to confront why stopping feels so dangerous in the first place.
Here’s the truth: hustle isn't the price of success. It's what happens when achievement becomes your attempt to finally feel like enough, and no accomplishment can pay that bill.
You’ll walk away with an understanding the critical difference between aligned work and compulsive hustle, including the four signs that reveal when you've fused your worth to your output. You'll learn the real-time question that can expose whether your action is being driven by the task or by anxiety, and the three shifts that move you from hustle to high-leverage action: divorcing your worth from your output, trading effort for leverage and making rest a discipline instead of a reward. Most importantly, you'll understand why grace and ease do not mean doing nothing. They mean doing the work without requiring the work to prove you deserve the life you're building.
Grab your Move to Millions Podcast Notebook, a pen and your favorite beverage and listen in to discover:
✔ How to tell the difference between aligned, productive action that grows your business and hustle that's actually attempting to soothe the fear that you haven't done enough
✔ How to recognize the four signs that your worth has become fused with your productivity
✔ How to trade effort for leverage and make rest part of your wealth strategy
✔And so much more
This episode is a call to stop treating exhaustion like evidence of ambition. Your work ethic is not the problem. The belief that you must keep earning your worth through it is.
This is your invitation to separate what you do from who you are. Because if rest makes you question your value, you're not just working hard anymore.

Darnyelle: [00:00:00] Ask yourself, "Why am I doing this right now?" If the honest answer is, "Because if I stop, I will feel anxious or behind or like I'm not doing enough," that is hustle, and that is the tax. It's driven by the fear of being unworthy if you are not in motion.

If this podcast has ever made you think deeper, shift something in your spirit, or take bold, bankable action in your business, would you do me a favor? Would you take a moment and scroll down and leave us a rating or review?
Listen, that's how we grow this message and get it into the ears of more seven-figure CEOs and seven-figure CEOs in the making. Your words matter. Your support matters. So please take a moment to go ahead, rate, review, and then come right back because this episode is about to shift everything You are the hardest worker you know.
You outwork [00:02:00] everyone. You wear those hustle, pray, repeat T-shirts and drink out of that hustle and slay all day mug. You think working hard is the answer, and you wear exhaustion like a badge. And somewhere deep down inside, you are actually proud of how much you hustle, how hard you go, and how much you can carry.
And the very thing, the grind that you are most proud of, it is the most expensive habit you have. Because somewhere along the way, you stopped working to build something, and you started working to prove something. And those, just to be clear, are not the same. One pays you, but the other bills you. You have been rewarded your entire life for the exact habit that is now keeping you from your next level of success.
Now, they call it dedication, but the bill, the bill calls it the hustle tax. Welcome [00:03:00] back to the series where we are auditing the eight hidden taxes that never show up on a financial statement but are quietly draining your capacity for wealth, for leadership, for impact, and peace. So far, we have covered three powerful taxes: the survival tax, why does success still feel unsafe; the approval tax, the cost of needing to be validated by others; and the control tax, why holding it all together is capping your growth.
If you missed any of the three of those, please go back because this series is building. And this episode, we arrive at what I consider to be a big one, the tax that you are most proud of paying, the one our entire culture has been applauding for decades. I mean, seriously, anytime you are celebrated, those celebrating are always applauding your effort, your hard work, your grind.
I can hear them now, "I'm so proud of you. You worked so hard." This episode is [00:04:00] all about the hustle tax, when grinding to achieve actually becomes an addiction. Here's what I mean, and I need you to really hear this because I know it goes against everything that you have ever been taught. Consistent action is required.
I will never tell you otherwise. But hustle? Hustle is optional, and most high achievers cannot tell the difference between the two anymore because somewhere along the way, they fused their worth to their output. They started believing that the harder they worked, the more they were worth. And the moment that fusion happened, work stopped being a tool, and it started being a drug.
But here's the thing: the Bible promises us sweatless victories, not hustle and grind. As you listen to this episode, there's one question I want you to answer: Where have you been grinding in your life? You are listening to the Move to Millions podcast. I am your host, Dr. Darnyelle, award-winning CEO of Incredible One Enterprises and the creator of several powerful [00:05:00] business growth systems and frameworks, including the Move to Millions method that we base this powerful podcast on.
This is part four of our latest series, The Hidden Taxes Keeping You From Making, Moving, and Ultimately Leaving Millions. Now, if you have been grinding harder and harder and somehow getting less and less of the life that you actually desire, this episode is gonna hip you to why. For a long time, I have to be honest, I was hustle's poster child.
From yay high to a grasshopper, I have been trying to outwork where I come from, the projects of Wilmington, Delaware, with addicts for parents. The only way that I personally knew to get out of that life was to grind, first with my studies and with every job. I started working at age 13, and I've had a job ever since, and I have been hustling to be seen as excellence.
I've been hustling so that I could feel [00:06:00] worthy and relevant. Listen, I built my businesses on grind. I outworked everybody. I said yes to every opportunity. I wore my full calendar like a crown. I was booked and busy and proud of it. And if you would've asked me back then who I was, I would've answered you with what I had accomplished because in my mind, I genuinely did not know the difference.
My identity and my output, they were the same exact thing. I was what I grinded to get, period, point-blank. That's just what it was. And let me tell you the moment that I really realized that that was not the way to live. I hit the goal that I had been chasing for years, the big one, seven figures. You know the kind of goal that you put on your vision board and you pray over on a regular basis like God didn't hear you the first time?
I remember the day it happened like it was yesterday, but here's the thing, it happened and it was a non-event. The heavens did not open. No one rode into town on a donkey. [00:07:00] There was no big, large, booming voice that said, "Darnyelle, you are now worthy." It was none of that. I literally went from, "Whoo, I did it To a small amount of relief, to immediately being panicked about the next thing I was going to have to do.
Because in my mind, it was everything Biggie said it was gonna be. It was more money and it was more problems, and I was literally just waiting for the other shoe to drop. There was so much panic that showed up in my body. Words I'd use today, not words that I would've used back then, 'cause I didn't know anything about this whole nervous system and dysregulation that I'm now teaching about and helping people to understand the importance of their soul leadership.
I didn't know any of that back then. But what I knew is that my body contracted. There was a lot of tension in places where I should have felt elation I should have felt warm and fuzzy and light and airy in my [00:08:00] body, but instead my shoulders felt tight and weighed down. The small of my back, there was a tremendous amount of pressure.
And if I'm being honest, although I had money, more money than I had ever had in my life at one point in time, looking at me and my bank account, I was so afraid that the next day I would check my account and somehow, some way, the Gilla monsters would have found a way to get rid of all the money. Listen, this is no way to live.
I was not living in a way that served me. So what did I do? I moved on to the next thing, the bigger number, the next set of proof. The burden that accompanied the big goal, because the goal was never really the goal. The goal was to finally feel like I was enough. That achievement changed everything, but it didn't, because achievement cannot deliver that feeling.
It never could. I built my whole multi-million dollar company [00:09:00] on hustle, and that day that I hit that goal, I felt nothing. Because you cannot achieve your way into feeling worthy. Hey, I hate to interrupt the goodness that's happening right now in this episode, but I need you to do me a quick favor. If this episode is blessing your life and business right now, will you take a few moments and rate and review the show?
Your words help more millions-minded entrepreneurs find us and step into their next level. All right. Thank you so much. Let's get back into the conversation, 'cause we're just getting started. Here is the cruelest part of the hustle tax. You think the next achievement will be the one that finally makes you feel worthy, so you chase it, and you chase it with everything you have, but when you catch it, the worthiness is not inside.
So what do you do? You decide it must need to be a bigger goal. And so then you chase that. It is literally a treadmill that you convince yourself is a ladder, and you are running with everything that you have, [00:10:00] and you are not actually going anywhere because the destination was never a number, it was a feeling.
And you are trying to earn a feeling that was always meant to be received, not achieved. And worthy is an identity, and until it is yours, nothing you chase will deliver worthiness. Now, it took me stepping all the way back, and you've heard this story before, to being willing to shut down the business to learn that my worth was never on the other side of my output.
It was never something that I had to earn. And the day that I stopped trying to achieve my way into being enough was the day that my business actually got healthier, because I was actually finally able to build it from wholeness instead of from lack or wanting There's a landmark study that was done out of Stanford by the economist John Pencavel.
I hope I'm pronouncing his name correctly. He set out to measure the actual relationship between the number of hours a person works and how much they [00:11:00] actually produce. Not how much they feel like they produce, but how much they actually produce. And here's what he found. Productivity per hour declines sharply once you cross about 50 hours in a week, and after 55 hours it falls literally off a cliff.
It drops so steeply that the additional hours are essentially worthless. The grind you are so proud of has a terrible return on investment. I want you to just let that sink in for a moment, because the hours you are most proud of, the late nights... I used to hate when I would be on social media, and I would see people talking about, "It's 3:00 in the morning.
Who's up grinding?" The weekends, the I outworked everybody hours are statistically the least productive hours you work in any given day. You're not being more effective. You are being more exhausted, and you have confused the exhaustion for effectiveness. And let's be clear. The grind is not a strategy. It is the most expensive way to produce the least amount of additional value paid for your health, your presence, or your peace.
That is what [00:12:00] happens when you hustle. And when you realize you don't need to hustle, it changes everything. So here are the four signs that you have confused effort with worthiness. I want you to notice which ones you wanna argue with. I want you to think about what's coming up for you as you listen to me talk about this hustle tax.
Sign number one: you wear busy like a badge. When someone asks who you are or how you are, your honest answer is busy, and you say it with a whole bunch of pride. You say it with your chest. Busy has become your identity and your evidence. It is how you prove to the world and to yourself that you matter and that you are in demand, that you are important, but busy is not the same as productive, and it is definitely not the same as significant.
Busy is just noise that you have learned to mistake for your worth. Sign number two: rest makes you anxious. You cannot sit still without feeling like you are falling behind. A day off comes with a low hum of guilt. Stillness feels [00:13:00] like laziness, and laziness feels like moral failure. So even your rest is not really rest because half of you is calculating what you should be doing instead.
If you cannot be still without guilt, you, my friend, are not resting. You are just hustling with your body temporarily on pause. Sign number three: your worth rises and falls with your output. On a productive day, you feel good about yourself. But on an unproductive day, you feel like a failure as a person, not just as a profession.
Like, this is the tell. This is the fusion. When your sense of who you are is moving up or down with your to-do list, your worth is not actually yours. You have rented it out to your productivity, and you are paying the rent in self-worth every single day. And sign number four: the people you love get your leftovers.
Your business gets your best energy, and your family and your friends and even your own body get whatever is left at the end, which is usually nothing. [00:14:00] You are present at dinner but answering email under the table. You are on vacation but checking your dashboard and checking in with your team and s- responding to clients and taking client calls and all the things.
The people who matter most are getting the most depleted version of you, and you keep telling yourself that you're doing all of this for them. But they did not ask for your productivity, they asked for your presence. And the hustle tax is quietly spending all of what you have left. Now, if two or more of these landed for you, I want you to listen to me very clearly.
You do not have a time management problem, and you do not need a better morning routine. You don't need to get up earlier. You have fused your worth to your work, and until you separate the two, no amount of optimizing your calendar will set you free. You will just hustle more efficiently towards the same emptiness Because hustle does not just cost you your time, it costs you the one thing it promised to deliver, the feeling that you are [00:15:00] finally enough.
But here's the cost that should stop you cold. The hustle tax cannot ever deliver what you are actually working for. You are not really grinding for the money. You are grinding for the feeling that you have finally done enough to be enough, and that feeling is not at the end of the hustle. It has never been, and it will never be.
So you can win every external prize, you can hit every number, you can earn every accolade, and still arrive at the millions still feeling exactly as unworthy as the day you first started, just way more tired. Remember, effort won't make you millions, embodiment will. This is the cruelest line item that you paid your whole life, and the one thing that you were buying was never for sale at the store.
There are those who say imposter syndrome is at the root of hustle because if you do not feel worthy or like you are enough, you try to mask it through effort. But again, effort will not make you millions, embodiment will. And embodiment [00:16:00] is about entering and occupying like you deserve to be there, experiencing it because you do.
Your birth made you worthy and enough, and hustling won't ever deliver what you don't embody, no matter how hard you try And let's be so clear that there is a cost that is deeper than the money and the feeling. It is your body and your legacy. Your body keeps score of the grind, and it sends the invoice eventually, usually as a health crisis at the least convenient moment.
And the legacy you say you are hustling to build, the one for your children, is being undermined by the very hustle that is supposed to create it. Because what you are actually modeling for them is that worth must be earned through exhaustion, that rest is for the weak, and that love means giving people your leftovers.
That is an inheritance that the hustle tax leaves. Not the wealth, the wound. The [00:17:00] exact pattern this company was supposed to break. And remember, we are treating our bodies as temples, not trash cans. So that means we have to stop paying the hustle tax, and we have to start operating from our worthiness. If you've been doing all the right things but still feel like you're carrying more weight than you should, it's not your strategy, it's your pattern.
There's a hidden way that you lead that's shaping your money, your success, and your peace. And until you see it, you'll keep working harder than you have to. The Ascension Archetypes Quiz shows you in just three minutes what's been driving your business behind the scenes and what needs to shift so that you can finally experience the overflow you're desiring.
It's fast, it's free, and it will give you the language for why things feel harder than they should right now. Go now to movetomillionsquiz.com to find out which archetype is running your business today [00:18:00] My best-selling book, Move to Millions: The Proven Framework to Become a Million-Dollar CEO with Grace and Ease Instead of Hustle and Grind, is now available on Audible.
That's right, you can listen to nugget after nugget, strategy after strategy, and chapter after chapter designed to help you to position your business for seven figures with grace and ease instead of hustle and grind. Go to Audible today to get your Audible copy of Move to Millions. Take a deep breath in for me.
Putting down the grind is not laziness, and it is not a luxury. It is the difference between building a legacy and becoming a cautionary tale. And to put it down, you have to be able to tell the difference between work and hustle. So let me show you what I mean. I believe that there is a framework that sets you free.
We cover it in our Move to Millions method. If you don't have a copy of the book, get one. Because once you can tell these two [00:19:00] apart, you can keep one and release the other. Now, work is required. Work is the aligned, focused, productive action that actually builds your business. It has a beginning and an end.
It flows from your calling, and it produces results, and then it stops because the thing is done. Work serves the business. Hustle, on the other hand, is optional. Hustle is compulsive. It has no off switch because it is not actually trying to finish a task. It is trying to soothe a feeling. It flows from a sense of not enough-ness, and it produces exhaustion because its real goal is not completion, it is the temporary relief of feeling just for a moment like you have done enough to be enough.
Hustle does not serve the business, it serves the lie Now, don't get me wrong, action is required, but hustle is optional. One serves the business, the other serves the lie that you are not yet enough. Now, here's the test that you can run in [00:20:00] real time. Ask yourself, "Why am I doing this right now?" And if the honest answer is because it needs to be done and I am the right person to do it, that, my friend, is action.
Keep moving in the direction of the finish line. But if the honest answer is because if I stop, I will feel anxious or behind or like I'm not doing enough, that is hustle, and that is the tax. Same activity, completely different engine. One is driven by the task, and the other is driven by the fear of being unworthy if you are not in motion.
And this is exactly what I mean when I say grace and ease instead of hustle and grind. Grace is not the absence of work. Grace is doing the work without your worthiness riding on it. It is building from a place of already being enough instead of working desperately to become enough. The work can look identical from the outside, but on the inside, one is [00:21:00] freedom and the other is bondage.
Speaker 2: Mm.
Speaker: Take a deep breath in. And here's what I need you to understand. Your nervous system, your body, and your family can tell the difference even when your calendar cannot. So let me give you the path because I don't want you to leave here feeling convicted but not equipped. Here are three shifts that will allow you to move from hustle to aligned, graceful, high-leverage action.
Shift number one: divorce your worth from your output. This is the root and nothing else works until you do it. You have to decide before the day even begins that your worth is already settled and accounted for, that it is fixed, and that it does not move based on how much you cross off your to-do list.
Your value was decided by God, the one, the creator of the abundant universe that made you, not by your productivity, and it is not up for daily reevaluation. When your worth is settled, work [00:22:00] becomes something you do instead of something you are and that one shift takes the desperation out of everything.
Shift number two: trade effort for leverage. Now, in order to do this, you're gonna have to stop asking, "How hard can I work?" and start asking, "What is the highest leveraged thing only I can do and how do I let everything else be done by someone else or something else?" One aligned focus hour on the right thing is worth more than 10 frantic hours on the wrong things.
Hustle wants you to do more, but leverage wants you to do less on purpose so that the few things that you do do actually multiply. You can stop grinding and start multiplying yourself. And shift number three: make rest a discipline, not a reward. You have been treating rest as something you earn after the work is done, which means you never rest because the work is never done.
Flip it. Rest is not the reward for the work. Rest is the discipline that makes the work sustainable and the proof that your [00:23:00] worth is not conditional. Even God rested and not because He was tired. He rested because it was holy and the work was complete. When you schedule rest before you have earned it, you protect your own personal Sabbaths and you protect them as fiercely as you protect any launch or any thing that you are doing and you are training your soul to believe the truth that you are worthy even when you are still That is not about time off.
That is about wealth strategy. The hustle tax does not chase the same proof in everyone. It hustles for whatever your wiring is most afraid it has not earned. Yep, I'm talking about the Ascension archetype quiz. If you haven't taken the quiz yet, this is your invitation, and if you are, I want you to anchor in 'cause I'm gonna share how this is showing up for you now that you know what your archetype is.
The quiz will take you three minutes. It's completely free, and it's waiting for you now at [00:24:00] movetomillionsquiz.com. When you take the quiz, you will learn which of the five archetypes is yours. You will either be the performer, the producer, the path maker, the powerhouse, or the prophet. Now, they are all divinely ordained, and there is no right or wrong archetype.
Your wiring is the key to unlocking your biggest breakthroughs yet, and this is why I'm so committed to talking about them in every single episode So question, who are you when you are not producing? Who are you when you are not hustling and grinding? And if you do not know, that's not a scheduling problem, that's a wholeness problem.
If you are a performer, hey, performer, you hustle to stay seen. Your proof of worth is visibility, so you grind to always be on, always producing content, always in front of an audience, terrified that if you go quiet for even a day, the world will forget that you exist. Your freedom is learning that your worth does not disappear when the camera turns off, and understanding that you are allowed [00:25:00] to rest without becoming irrelevant.
If you are a producer, hey, producer, you hustle for output, and yours is the most obvious version of this task. Your worth is fused to how much you accomplish, so you grind to keep the production machine running, because a day without output feels like a day that you did not earn your keep. You did not deserve to be in that day.
Now, your freedom is learning that you are not a machine, and that your value is not the sum total of what you produced in any given day. If you are a path maker, hey, path maker, you hustle by always building the next thing. Your worth is tied to momentum and creation, so you grind out the new launch, the new idea, the new venture, chasing the next hit of feeling like you are doing something that matters.
Your freedom is learning that you do not have to keep producing something new to justify your existence. And that one thing nurtured beats 10 things [00:26:00] that have just been started. If you are the powerhouse, hey, powerhouse, you hustle to prove you are strong. Your worth is tied to how much you can carry and how little you visibly need.
So you grind to never break, never crack, never be the one who could not handle it all. Your freedom is learning that you do not have to earn your worth by out-enduring everyone, and that being held is not the same as being weak. And last but not least, if you are the prophet, hey, prophet, you hustle to feel deserving.
Your worth is tied to depth and rightness, so you overprepare, overstudy, and overserve, because somewhere along the way, you believe that you have to earn the right to the gift that you have been given by God. You cannot just receive the download. You feel like you have to labor your way into deserving it.
Your freedom is learning that the gift was grace, not wages, and grace was never something that you had to grind to get. Listen, [00:27:00] every archetype is grinding for worthiness in a way that is different Different proof, but guess what? It's all the same lie. And the question is the same for every single archetype.
Who are you when you are not hustling and grinding? So you might be asking yourself, "Okay, Darnyelle, how do I actually put the grind down for good?" Now, I'll be honest, not with a productivity hack and not with sheer willpower, because willpower is just hustle that is aimed at your hustle. You put it down by building the internal capacity to believe that you are enough without having to prove anything, and that capacity is built.
And when capacity is built, it doesn't just land. It shows up in a way that changes the way that your soul does everything. It's a big part of the reason why we created Sanctuary Corps and we are committed to working on your soul at three times the rate we work on your strategy. Because until your worth is settled on the inside, sourced from God instead [00:28:00] of from your output, you will keep grinding no matter how successful you get.
Sanctuary Corps is where legacy-led CEOs build the capacity to lead from grace instead of from grind. There is no program like it on the market. Listen, I am watching these women literally change everything in their lives because they committed to becoming their own sanctuary. It has been a game changer to actually learn what it means to feel safe inside of the success that you've been praying for and actually have the courage to develop it through doing the hard work.

The enemy is the lie that is attached to your work ethic, the belief that you have to keep earning your right to exist and that you are only as valuable as your last accomplishment, that rest must be deserved.
That lie is the tax. Not the [00:30:00] work, the lie. You were never meant to hustle for your inheritance. I believe that if you did not come from millions, yes, millions must come from you, but they come through alignment, obedience, and embodiment, and leverage, not through grinding yourself into the dust. Hustle is canceled.
Action, yes, it's required, and even the work is meant to be done from grace. Here are three things I want you to do this week as you continue to noodle on the significance of this episode. Number one, of course, if you haven't done so already, take the Ascension archetype quiz at movetomillionsquiz.com.
It'll take you three minutes. It's completely free, and you'll find out exactly what you're wiring hustles to prove because you cannot release a pattern that you have been unsuccessful naming. Second thing I want you to do, I want you to answer the question out loud for yourself: Who are you when you are not hustling and grinding?
If the answer scares you, don't run from it. Sit with it. The blank space is not emptiness. It is the room where your actual [00:31:00] self has been waiting for you to stop long enough to meet her. And the third thing I want you to do is I want you to schedule one block of rest this week before you have earned it.
Put it on the calendar like a client meeting and keep it like a covenant. Let it be the first rep of proving to yourself that you are worthy even when you are still. Then I want you to share this episode with a CEO in your life who wears busy like a badge. They need to hear this so much, and you need to share it with them.
Now, I want you to put your dominant hand on your heart and the other on your belly and repeat after me. My worth is valuable. I am enough whether I produce or not. I trade the grind for grace and effort for alignment. This season is about grace instead of grind, and I am ready, worthy, and capable. Next week is the turn of the entire series.
The first four taxes were about what you need to put down. The next [00:32:00] one is all about what you have not been able to pick up yet, and it might be the most important conversation we have this entire season. We're gonna get all the way into the receiving tax, why more is not coming because less has already been received.
We're going to talk about why so many phenomenal producers are terrible receivers, why your inability to receive support, whether we're talking money, rest, or help, is quietly capping everything, and why the breakthrough you are grinding for might be on the other side of finally learning how to receive.
That episode is going to make the entire series, so don't miss it. I'll see you next time. Take care. Thank you for tuning in to the Move to Millions podcast. Every legacy-led CEO has a divine design, and yours is waiting to be revealed. Take the Ascension archetype quiz at movetomillionsquiz.com to uncover how you're wired for wealth and what needs to shift to make [00:33:00] your next move with grace and ease instead of hustle and grind.
And if this episode blessed you, do me a favor, subscribe, rate, and leave us a review. And always remember, millions are your birthright, and to access them, you need only move.
